open source
the sembreak has seen me invest a lot of time into open-source technologies. not that i haven't done any commercial development, but i'd say that i spend 80% of my time lately acquainting myself with the particulars of linux.
i'm talking about ubuntu's breezy in particular. i've been reviewing how to configure linux and have recently enabled interaction between my windows workgroup. it's not something that big, but it's a start. hehe. the unknown keeps me busy during such times of stasis and i couldn't be any happier. i'm thinking of permanently porting my laptop operations to linux for my last semester of school. i wonder how fun that would be...

Thats a lot of services/applications. How are you progressing?
I've deployed Ubuntu in my home network as well, and I've been looking at tools to make management easier[1], as well as _evaluate_ Linux games since they are the perfect tools to get your siblings to work on Linux longer ;).
Also, I found VNC slow. I thought it was decent when I reported it for cs159.5, but Windows's Remote Desktop feature blows it away. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong though, but that has been the story whether the VNC service is running in Linux or in Windows (2000, to be exact).
I did look into FreeNX. It's faast!, and it allowed me to run a Linux application as if it was a standalone one in Windows. Cool stuff. Too bad the FreeNX package isn't available in Ubuntu (I think), but there are some 3rd party repositories for it.
Lastly, could you share your findings with Wine? I haven't touched it, so I wouldn't know hehe.
lol, i would like to update you about the progress, but my computer died just as i was making headway into the coolness of linux.
re:wine, there were a lot of libraries you had to include and watch out for for some window apps to run. i haven't really gone into it but one of the things that i encountered was the need for a windows registry. one of my games wouldn't load because it couldn't find the serial key hidden in the registry.
as soon as i get myself a replacement unit, i shall go bacak to my experimental laboratory.
